Many employers and managers are still uncertain when to grant an employee family responsibility leave. To seek certainty on this, the implication needs to be sought from the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, which states the following:
An employee, who is in employment with his employer for a period of more than four months, is entitled to three days paid family responsibility leave in each annual leave cycle.
Family responsibility leave must be granted to the employee under the following circumstances:
v When an employee’s child is born;
v When the employee’s child is sick;
v The death of an employee’s spouse or life partner;
v The death of an employee’s parent, adoptive parent, grandparent, child, adopted child, grandchild or sibling.
